Bright Future for Beacon Climbing 16/02/2012

The popular indoor climbing centre, Beacon Climbing, currently based in Ceunant (near Waunfawr), has now taken possession of the former Barcud Studio building on the Cibyn Estate in Caernarfon. Work has begun on transforming the former television studio into a space offering state of the art climbing and bouldering facilities that will be among the best in the U.K.

Acquisition of the Barcud site after lengthy negotiations, means the Beacon can finally realise their plans to upgrade and replace the current premises with a much larger climbing centre. It is planned to relocate to the new premises in June this year.

The impressive space at the centre of the building will house climbing facilities up to 17 metres high, over a floor area that is about five times bigger than the main leading area the Beacon offers at the moment. A Director of Beacon Climbing, Gill Lovick, said: "The acquisition is an exciting opportunity to breathe new life into the building, that has been sitting empty and started to become a target for vandals since Barcud Derwen went into liquidation in 2010."  

As well as being an indoor climbing gym the new centre will house the U.K.s first CrazyClimb installation. Unlike traditional indoor climbing facilities which require dedicated training for the individual, CrazyClimb can be enjoyed without any previous experience and without any specialist training. Gill Lovick, added: "It offers wacky climbing challenges for both adults and children."



The new centre will also offer office space to rent, a lecture theatre, kids play area and drop-in café. Gill Lovick, said: "This development will be one of the most exciting sports development programmes in the area and will provide an enhanced experience, not only to existing local customers, families and groups, but also to anyone visiting north Wales and looking to participate in an exciting recreational activity. The development is being grant aided by the Welsh Assembly Tourism Investment Support Scheme."

She added: "It is anticipated that not only will the existing jobs be safeguarded, but that another full time job will be created, along with increased employment opportunities for appropriately qualified freelance climbing instructors."

The building originally cost £2.2 million when it was built around 1990 but the Barcud Derwen facility closed in June 2010 with the loss of 35 jobs. The existing centre at Ceunant will remain fully operational until the Barcud site is officially opened and will then close permanently.
