Access to Water Manifesto
Participation in water-based activity is severely restricted in Wales as there is no right to enjoy access to water. The WCA (Welsh Canoeing Association) have published a manifesto to try and help remedy this situation (click here
It outlines why access to inland waters in Wales is of vital importance and points out that now the Welsh Assembly can legislate for Welsh people (Government of Wales Act 2006) the time has come to enshrine this in law.
It should be noted that our Celtic cousins in Scotland enjoy a more enlightened attitude to access with their Land Reform Act 2003, ensuring a public right of access to inland water bound by a code of statutory conduct while protecting private rights at the same time.
