The Gran Fondo Cymru 2007 - 27/05/2007

The start and finish is at the Pen-llyn Leisure Centre on the shore
of Bala Lake and there are three routes which tour the Snowdonia
National Park and Cambrian mountains of Wales, taking you through spectacular mountain scenery, mostly on quiet, beautifully surfaced roads. The timing and terrain provide ideal preparation for the big European events and a good yardstick for those preparing for the Gran Fondo Campagnolo in June, or L'Etape du Tour in July - so it will be a great opportunity for a test of the legs after the hard work of the Winter months.

New for 2007
King of the Mountains category, with times from Llanuwchllyn to the top of Bwylch-y-Groes listed on the result sheets.

The choice of route is optional on the day, but an indication of your intended choice on the entry form helps with logistics:

The Sporting Route (38 miles/61 km) is
for those who are not fully fit, or just want a shorter ride, but it is
still demanding and hilly. It follows the B4391 / B4407 to
Pentrefoelas, returning to Bala via Frongoch.

The Gran Fondo Route (108 miles/173 km/3575m of climbing) As for Sporting to Pentrefoelas, then through Nebo, Llanrwst and Capel
Curig to the first feed station at Plas y Brenin, on to Llanberis,
Caernarfon, Beddgelert, Rhyd and the second feed at Ffestiniog. Thence
to Trawsfynydd, Llanuwchllyn, Llangower and finish in Bala -This is a
serious bike ride and most will be able to resist the temptation to
turn right after Llanuwchllyn, so close to home.

The Super Challenge (125 miles/200 km/4618m of climbing) -
This is the same as the Gran Fondo route, save that after Llanuwchllyn
you turn right and climb the Bwlch-y-Groes to the third feed, then
descend to Lake Vyrnwy and return to Bala via the Hirnant Pass and
Rhos-y-Gwalia... only for the super fit and the brave.
