The Conwy Ascent is a slightly unusual canoeing event, as it involves paddling upstream. Held annually on the tidal section of the beautiful Afon Conwy, the race takes advantage of the flood tide, starting in the Deganwy Narrows, the tide carries paddlers past the stunning 13th Century Conwy Castle and finishes at Dolgarrog Bridge approximately 15km upstream. The event is run by Dyffryn Conwy Paddlers and comprises of both a highly competitive marathon race and a more leisurely tour. Paddlers may race or tour in the canoe or kayak of their choice. All paddlers completing the Conwy Ascent will receive a finishing memento. The river is rich in wildlife and beautiful scenery and depending on the conditions offers many challenges in reading the water and judging weather conditions.
