Indy Climbing Wall Makeover 06/09/2013

Reopening after an extensive refurbishment, The Indy Climbing Wall now offers improved bouldering and climbing facilities. Even the wall's signature and most popular feature, the striking free standing boulder that catches your eye as you walk through the doors, has had a make-over, with new angles and additional surface area.

A continuous matting system with a carpet (to minimise dust) has been introduced below the bouldering. The lead climbing wall has been rebuilt by local climbing wall construction company, Beacon Manufacturing, with the design giving the option of longer routes. Recesses either side of the main overhang provide useful instructional and learning to lead areas. Beginners are catered for with a dedicated area for low-grade bottom-roping and a slab.

The resin wall with its arch has been retained but re-featured and repainted as it's popular for teaching climbing technique and with those that like a 'real-rock' feel to their indoor climbing. More experienced climbers that are focused on improving their stamina/endurance have not been forgotten, with a dedicated circuit and campus boards.

It's all welcome news for local climbers, community groups and the military service personnel that regularly use the wall.

Indy Wall manager and owner, Jon Ratcliffe, explained: "Our wall is unusual in that although it is effectively a public wall, it is also an important training facility and space for the Indefatigable Joint Service Mountain Training Centre (JSMTC). We're sited just outside the Indefatigable base and while service personnel always have access, community use is strongly encouraged."

He added: "We've forged strong links over the years with community groups who'll now be able to enjoy the benefits of the new look Indy that include the Urdd, The Outdoor Partnership and local council groups. This year we held the recently launched annual county schools climbing competition, the first of its kind in the area."
