Snowdon Visitor Numbers Peak in 2013 22/04/2014

A report from Snowdonia National Park, shows that last year was the busiest year on Snowdon since records have been kept by installing counters on all the main routes in 2008.

The figure of 449,327 walkers and climbers was 23% up on the 2012 total of 365,943 visitors, easily beating the previous highest total of 430,258 in 2010. In comparison, the 2013 total for Ben Nevis was 118,713. The 17,588 people choosing to ascend Crib Goch - via the east ridge - was also a highest recorded total.

Bear in mind that these visitor monitoring figures don't include those walkers ascending the mountain by less well-trodden routes such as via Cwm Glas, Moel Eilio ridge or the Cyrn Las ridge.

For stat lovers, Saturday was the most popular day of the week on Snowdon (111,040), August was the busiest month (86,726) and more pairs of feet used the Llanberis Path (196,114) than any other route. The Ranger Path on a Wednesday is the least busiest time on the mountain.

In other areas of the Park, Ogwen and Idwal had 123,192 visitors in 2013 and Cadair Idris was definitely the place to escape the crowds with a total of only 49,240 walkers (slightly less than 2012). As with Snowdon, August and Saturday's were the the peak times.    

Despite Snowdon getting plenty of coverage during 2013 in the mountain biking press as a 'must-do ride' and anecdotal evidence that the mountain continues to attract a growing number of riders, the yearly 'monitoring figure' for the most common cycle route up and down the mountain - the Llanberis Path - was a surprisingly low-figure of 636 with an October peak of 180 cyclists. A voluntary agreement exists on Snowdon's bridleways not to cycle on them between 10 a.m. and 5.0 p.m. from 1st May - 30th September.
